My daughter-in-law Rachelle started doing Crossfit at Crossfit SoChac in early 2023. She encouraged me to give it a try, as I was struggling to find the motivation to go to my local gym regularly and self-train the way I have been trying to do, to improve my strength and maintain a healthy body as I get older.

I played most sports in my youth and have always been competitive, but like most mature men, I had not really done anything for years, and after watching the 2023 Crossfit Games, I thought it would be great if I could do that. I did not have the Skills and definitely not the Stamina to do what those 65+ guys were doing. So I started to find WODs (Workout of the Day), and trying to do them.

I January 2024, I was able to get into 3 Crossfit Classes (3 days in a row) and experienced the difference between “trying to do it by yourself” and being part of a group of people (30 to 40 years younger than me), all encouraging me to push myself through the workouts. The coach was amazing, helping me to understand the importance of correctly warming-up and then doing the workout to the best of my ability.

I decided to enter the 2024 Crossfit Open and do the Foundation level, more for the experience and to establish a Base-line on which to improve. Crossfit SoChac were amazing in helping me with the warm-ups. I found that I could do the Tests as scaled and completed the open.

After a short 2 months and at 71, I’m fitter than I was 20 years ago, so I want to encourage everyone to try it, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll feel fitter and stronger than before. Crossfit is based on SKILLS, STAMINA and STRENGTH, but you don’t need any of these to get started. They will all improve the more you do it all you need to do is show up and start at the level you are now.
