Your First CrossFit Class: What to Expect
Short answer: If you're wondering what to expect at your first CrossFit class, here it is: a coach-led hour where every movement is taught and scaled to you, so you don't need to be in shape first. At CrossFit SoChac in South Austin, you don't start by jumping into a hard group workout. You start with a free intro with a coach, then learn the basics in one-on-one onboarding sessions before you join group classes.
Nervous? That's normal, and this guide walks you through it step by step.

Do you need to be in shape to start CrossFit?
No. This is the number one reason people wait, and it's backwards. You get in shape by starting, not before.

Every CrossFit workout can be scaled. That means the coach changes the weight, the number of reps, or the movement itself so it fits you today. Our CrossFit classes are "designed for everyone—from beginners to experienced athletes," and our site puts it simply: "Whether you're new or advanced, workouts adapt to you."
Is CrossFit hard? Yes, it's challenging. But "hard for you" is different from "too hard." A good coach keeps you in the zone where you're working, moving well, and leaving ready to come back.
How getting started works at CrossFit SoChac
A lot of gyms just send you to a group class and hope for the best. Ours is a three-step path, straight from our Get Started page:
- Book Free Intro. "Schedule a no sweat intro with a coach to discuss your goals and create a personalized fitness plan." It's a talk and a tour, not a workout. You'll "meet our staff, tour our facility, and discuss your health & wellness goals," and your coach uses what you share to build your on-ramp and a journey tailored to where you are.
- Complete Onboarding. "Learn the basics in one-on-one sessions designed to prepare you for group classes or personal training." This is your on-ramp, tailored to your specific needs, so there's no fixed number of sessions.
- Join the Community. "Join group classes or personal training, improve your fitness, and feel great!"
That middle step is the big one for beginners. By the time you walk into your first group class, you've already practiced the basic movements with a coach.
Prefer more one-on-one help? Personal training is an option "if you are not ready for group classes." If you're 55 or older, our Legends class is a small-group class that prioritizes "safety, simplicity, and support."
Before your first class
- Book your free intro. Use the form on our Get Started page or call (512) 851-1626.
- Think about your goals. Fat loss, strength, more energy, keeping up with your kids? Your coach will use this to build your plan, so it helps to come in with an idea.
- Make a list of injuries and health concerns. Old knee surgery, back pain, pregnancy, medications, anything. Coaches can't scale around what they don't know.
- Pick a class time you can actually protect. See the schedule below.
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early (up to 30 for your very first class). That gives you time to find the space, meet your coach, and get settled. If you're not a member yet or have never attended a class with us, you'll sign a waiver before class. (There's no waiver for the No Sweat Intro.) We're at 11600 Menchaca Rd #301 in South Austin.
During your first class
Our CrossFit classes are one hour, and every class at SoChac follows the same flow:

- Whiteboard brief. The coach explains the workout, what each movement is, and how it can be scaled. Don't worry about the lingo. Words like "AMRAP" (as many rounds or reps as possible) get explained.
- Warm-up. A coach-led warm-up to get your joints moving and your heart rate up.
- Skill or strength work. You practice the day's key movements with coaching, at a weight that's right for you.
- The workout. The part everyone pictures. You'll do your version of it.
- Cooldown and cleanup. You put equipment away, and this is usually where people start learning your name.
How to make it a good first day:
- Focus on form, not speed. Nobody is grading your score.
- Ask questions."Can you show me that again?" is a great question.
- Take modifications. They aren't a step down. They're how everyone trains.
- Pace yourself. Finishing at 80% and feeling good beats going all-out and feeling awful.
Feeling nervous about this part? You're in good company. Read Carmen T.'s story, who describes being terrified to start after a lifetime of bad gym-class memories, and Rachelle D.'s story about walking in nervous on day one.
After your first class
- Expect some soreness. It's common a day or two after a new kind of workout and usually eases up as your body adapts.
- Drink water, eat a real meal, and sleep. Recovery is part of training.
- Book your next class before you lose momentum. The second class is where the habit starts.
- Tell your coach how you felt. Too easy, too hard, something pinched? That helps them adjust your plan.
Want help with food, too? We also offer nutrition coaching.
Your first class checklist
- Comfortable workout clothes you can squat and stretch in
- Flat, stable athletic shoes (skip the thick, squishy running shoes if you have another pair)
- Water bottle
- Small towel
- Your list of injuries, health concerns, and goals
- An open mind
You don't need lifting shoes, a belt, or gloves.

How many days a week should a beginner do CrossFit?
Start with two. As we wrote in You'll Never Find Time. You Have to Make Time.: "Start with two workouts a week... Once two workouts becomes part of your routine, adding a third becomes much easier."
Consistency beats intensity, and showing up twice a week for a year beats five days a week for three weeks.
Our Group Class Membership is currently listed at $100 (bi-weekly) for unlimited group classes: CrossFit, HYROX, and Olympic Weightlifting. Pricing can change, so check our pricing page for current rates or ask during your free intro.
First CrossFit class FAQs
Do I need to be in shape to start CrossFit?
No. Every workout is scaled to your current fitness level with lighter weights, fewer reps, or easier versions of movements. You get in shape by starting.
Is CrossFit good for beginners, or is it too hard?
It's good for beginners when it's coached and scaled. Workouts are challenging, but your coach adjusts them so they're hard for you, not too hard. At SoChac, new members learn the basics in one-on-one onboarding sessions tailored to their needs before joining group classes.
I'm nervous about my first CrossFit class. What helps?
Tell your coach it's your first time, arrive 10–15 minutes early (up to 30 for your first class), and focus on learning the movements instead of keeping up with anyone. Everyone in the room had a first day too.
How many days a week should a beginner do CrossFit?
Start with two workouts a week. Once that's a habit, add a third. Two to three days gives you time to learn the movements and recover.
Is the first visit at CrossFit SoChac free?
Yes. You start with a free No Sweat Intro, a talk and tour with a coach (no workout). Your coach learns your goals and builds an on-ramp tailored to where you are. Book it on our Get Started page.
Ready for your first class?
Whether you live in South Austin, Circle C, or Buda TX, the hardest part is walking in the door the first time. We'll take it from there. Come meet a coach, see the gym, and talk through your goals. No pressure.
